Hellas S.C. History

Organized soccer in the Greek community has been in existence for over 5 decades in the city of Winnipeg. The founding members of Greek soccer in Winnipeg were Bill Papas and Mary Kelekis, who compiled a team together in 1959 and named it the 'Olympians'. In 1961 the responsibility of running the 'Olympians' was given to John Scouras and Eugenis Papadakis. The 'Olympians played in The Division Greater Winnipeg up until 1969 and then joined with the Manitoba Central Soccer League. At that point John Scouras took on the responsibilities of manager, coach, and even waterboy up until 1974-75.

In 1975 the team changed its name to 'Hellas' - which is another term for Greece - and began in the 'fourth division' in the MCSL. The team was conducted by Leo Mikos, Bill Tsaboukos, and Gus Angelopoulos along with John Scouras. The Hellas Soccer Club was prosperous and continually improved from year to year. The team ultimately reached the 'first division' in the MCSL, which at that time was the top division in Manitoba. In 1981, the new management of Bill Saitis, George Michalopoulos, Pileas Economou, and Gus Angelopoulos took over and lead Greek soccer into its third decade. The team continued to excel under this management. In 1988 the team was handed over to Nick Papadopoulos along with George Ifandis, who acted as player and coach. The Hellas Soccer Club competed in the first division until the 1993-94 season, when the team placed first and advanced to the premier division of the MCSL.

In the 1994-95, John Vagianos became president and Pileas Economou became vice president and held their titles for 10 years. After two years in the 'premier division' the team decided to enter the Molson Super Soccer Alliance where they competed for several years. In 2001 Hellas Joined the newly formed Manitoba Major Soccer League and was led to the MSA Cup final by coach Gus Vilas.

Presently the Hellas Soccer Club is coached by Kostas Vailas and Patrick Distefani. The current President is George Ifandis. The team expects to achieve as much success as they've had in their rich history. The Hellas Soccer Club continues to be supported by the Greek community of Winnipeg. The community strongly feels that soccer is a good way to keep the Greek youth together, introduce others to the Greek culture, and represent the rich Greek tradition in Winnipeg. OPA!
